How Does a Heat Pump System Work?
Heat pumps work much like traditional central air conditioning systems, with one major deviation – they are able to reverse their refrigerant cycle. An air conditioner evaporates refrigerant in the evaporator coil located in the indoor unit. That allows it to absorb heat from the air in the home. That refrigerant then travels outdoors to the condenser unit, where it is condensed in order to release its heat.
With a heat pump, that entire process is reversed in the winter. Then, the refrigerant is evaporated in the outdoor coil. It absorbs heat from the air outside, and is compressed to further boost its thermal energy. The heat is then released via condensing in the indoor coil. That means that the heat pump does not generate new heat, but rather transfers existing heat for an incredibly efficient performance.
