Your Furnace Shouldn’t Be Making These 4 Noises

furnace-with-panel-open

When you turn your furnace on for the season, you should be relieved. You can finally kick back and enjoy the warm air as the wind roars and the rain pours outside. That is, unless your furnace starts making these noises. Then, your peace of mind is ruined and you don’t even know what the problem is.

If these noises get bad enough, you’ll need furnace repair in Vancouver WA before long. Let’s talk about the four main noises that your furnace should not be making (at least, not to this extent).

Excessive Chirping

It’s time to turn your furnace on, but right after it’s supposed to fire up, you hear a chirping sound. It’s not a bird, but it’s definitely something. This is actually common, but there’s a point where it becomes excessive.

If the chirping is extremely loud and doesn’t stop after a short amount of time, you could have a problem with your furnace. There’s a chance that the mounting plate could be grinding against other components of the furnace such as your blower wheel. A technician will have to inspect it to know for sure.

Rattling or Constant Banging

When heat expands throughout your furnace, there’s going to be some banging sounds. This can be jarring at first if you haven’t had your furnace on, but it’s not a bad thing. It’s when the rattling is violent and doesn’t stop that you need a repair.

Vibrations will cause metal parts to make noises from time to time, but when the banging is super loud you’ll be able to hear it from much farther away than you normally do. An access hatch or some bolts could be loose and moving around from the vibrations, although it could also be a problem with your heat exchanger.

Heat exchanger issues are potentially life threatening, so if you suspect that your heat exchanger is the problem, call for emergency furnace repair.

Irritating Clicking or Whirring

Clicking sounds happen when the air pressure inside of your furnace shifts and it’s completely normal. It’s supposed to stop shortly after your furnace operation begins though, so if that’s not happening, you could have an issue.

Just as we mentioned with chirping sounds, you need to be aware of potential issues with your heat exchanger. If your heat exchanger is damaged and leaking, you need emergency furnace repair.

High-Pitched Screeching

Have you ever heard the sound of metal on metal without lubrication? It’s ghastly, but if you hear any high-pitched sounds coming from your furnace, it may resemble that same irritating sound. It’s likely that some bearings have lost lubrication, which can be fixed during standard furnace maintenance or with a quick repair call.

Your Furnace is in Need of a Fix

Now that you know what noises your furnace shouldn’t be making, it’s time to call a technician to repair your furnace. It’s worth taking the time out of your day to listen to what’s going on with your furnace so you can get it fixed.
